Honduras
Economic Background:
In 1998 Honduras was devastated by Hurricane Mitch, which killed 5,600 people and left about 2 million dollars worth of damage. Since then the country has not had a full recovery affecting their economy drastically. Since then their economy has been in a slow rebound.
For three years Honduras was at a rating of 4.0, previously the country’s rating was at a 3 (2009). In 2009 the military had to step in and arrest the President of the country José Manuel Zelaya. The president was trying to amend the country’s constitution to allow himself to stay in office longer. During this time civil liberties were suspended for 45 days. During this time more violence erupted and freedom of press was taken away.
